![]() ![]() How to Identify a Bad Transmission Control Module You should now find your TCM has been reset and functioning as normal.Once your TCM and battery are reinstalled you can start your vehicle again.Make sure you put the signal wire connectors back to their original state. Disconnect the battery cables again and leave them disconnected whilst you reconnect and replace the TCM.Connect your battery cables in the reserve order that you previously carried out and leave it to run for 20 seconds before turning off your engine.If your multimeter begins reading anything lower than 11 volts then you know your vehicle can now enter fail-safe mode. Connect your multimeter to this wire once located and ground it, then put your transmission into Park if you have an automatic or Neutral if you have a manual.Look for a grey wire with a stripe of black/white on the harness connector of your TCM, this wire controls whether your vehicle will enter fail-safe mode when it enters into Neutral or Park (P).It should be easy to find either behind your glove box, under either of the front seats, or on the driver’s side front engine compartment edge. You may need to unplug it but it depends on its location. Pull out your vehicle’s transmission control module.Disconnect the positive cable from your battery and starter solenoid.Before you start you need to disconnect the negative/ground cable from your battery, this means when you are working near the car’s computer you don’t need to worry about avoiding an electric shock if you accidentally touched it.This process also involves disconnecting your vehicle’s battery which is not recommended for some models and comes with the risk of electric shock so you need to exercise caution when doing so.
